Spinal Decompression for Disc Pain and Sciatica
May 13, 2026 • 7 min read
If disc-related back pain or sciatica is running your day, you have probably been offered rest, pills, or “learn to live with it.” Spinal decompression is a mechanical traction treatment we use for some of those cases — not all of them.
What the table actually does
You lie on a programmable table in a comfortable harness. The machine applies gentle, graded pull to the lumbar or cervical spine, then releases. The idea is to reduce load on irritated disc and nerve tissue so you can move and exercise with less guarding. A typical cycle lasts several minutes and feels like a slow stretch, not a yank.
Who may be a candidate
- Disc herniation or bulge with leg or arm symptoms
- Sciatica that eases with certain positions
- Chronic low back pain that has not settled with ordinary care
It is not a fit for everyone. Unstable fractures, some surgical hardware, infection, malignancy, and certain medical conditions rule it out. Pregnancy and severe osteoporosis need a different conversation. We screen before anyone is strapped in.
How it fits a whole plan
Decompression without a home program is a stall. We pair it with McKenzie-style directional exercise when it helps, core and hip loading, and manual therapy. If your pain is better explained by a hip, a sacroiliac joint, or simple deconditioning, we will say so and skip the table.
